THIS WEEK’S GRAPHICS
Two graphics this week! The first is based on Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” The second reads, “Do the math: count your blessings.” If you live in the U.S. either of these would be ideal for use this weekend for Thanksgiving. If you do not live in the U.S., since there is no mention of the American holiday, they are still appropriate for use anytime of the year!
Any of the graphics appearing on the website are absolutely free for use in your non-profit organization’s publications, and can be downloaded at www.timothyreport.com

FASTING AND FEASTING
Suggestions for Fasting and Feasting: Fast from discontent; feast on thankfulness. Fast from worry; feast on trust. Fast from anger; feast on patience. Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayers. Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. Fast from discouragement, feast on hope. Fast from media hype, feast on the honesty of the Bible. Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence. Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that undergirds.

PASTOR, WHAT DOES THE CHURCH EXPECT OF YOU?
Lloyd G. Smith of Alexandria, Virginia, wrote in “Reader’s Digest” (month unknown, 1977):
Soon after our new minister assumed his duties, he appeared before the church board with a request for authorization to pay a teen-age church member to keep the lawn mowed at the manse. One of the deacons remarked that our former minister always mowed the lawn himself.
“I know that,” said our new minister. “I’ve already spoken to him about it, but he says he doesn’t want to do it anymore.”
He got the authorization.

GOD IN SCHOOL
A dog had followed his owner to school. His owner was a fourth grader at a public elementary school.
However, when the bell rang, the dog sidled inside the building and made it all the way to the child's classroom before a teacher noticed and shoo'ed him outside, closing the door behind him.
The dog sat down, whimpered and stared at the closed doors.
Then God appeared beside the dog, patted his head, and said, "Don't feel bad fella'.... they won't let ME in either."

A GOOD THANKSGIVING STORY…
AND A LITTLE CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM
Men, men . . ." My 17-month-old son, Christian, held out his tiny hand toward me, and repeated, "men, men."
I had just put him in his high chair for lunch and served him my gourmet version (I add peas!) of the ubiquitous macaroni and cheese. I was just sitting down beside him with my plate similarly laden, when his sweet, anxious voice persisted with his "Men, men, men." His arm reached toward me, so I offered him a spoonful of my fare; maybe it just looked better from my china plate than it did from his plastic "Best Kid Ever" bowl. But no, he maintained his undifferentiated reaching, his hand held out. How about some pureed organic carrots and squash? (Really not bad stuff, if you don't want to chew.) Still, his blue eyes pleaded for something else, something different. For what?
I got him some juice. No good. Still the "men, men." He didn't want my food, different food, my dish, or juice. What did he want? Exasperated, I just gave him my hand. He folded his little hand into my palm. Finally satisfied.
"Men."
"Ohhhh," I gasped. "I forgot to pray." Our family always holds hands during prayer. "Men" was Christian's version of "amen," what my husband and I chorus as we finish praying. He was asking to pray.
I felt terrible. How could I forget to pray with my son? How could I get so busy and distracted that I forgot to thank God for that which sustains us? I also felt excited. I was overjoyed that my son, who as a child of God, in himself an answer to prayer, would be the one to stop me in my tracks, and point my eyes beyond the worries of world strife, human suffering, issues at work, socks to sort, telephone calls to make, papers to grade. He forced me to cease my frenzy, to look beyond.
So I enfolded his hand within mine. And out loud I thanked God for our food. Christian repeated, "men," pulled his hand away, and dug into his macaroni and cheese while I silently finished my prayer. With that deep tug that only a parent's heart can know, I thanked God that He gave me this child who would lead me with his simple faith.

GOD
If God were as changeable as I am, I would always be seeking a new god on my current terms. But God isn’t like me. God doesn’t change. We come to Him on His terms; He doesn’t come to us on ours. I can meet God, when I do, I quickly see that God is bigger than my grasp of Him. Listen and understand, Jesus said. It takes both. People who listen to Jesus and understand what He is saying find what they are searching for. People who listen and understand do at last know who God is, and they know who they are.

HE IS THE SAME TODAY AS HE WAS YESTERDAY
Nothing can alter the character of God. In the course of a human life, tastes and outlook and temper may change radically: a kin, equable man may turn bitter and crotchety: a man of good-will may grow cynical and callous. But nothing of this sort happens to the Creator. He never becomes less truthful, or merciful, or just, or good, than He used to be. The character of God is today, and always will be, exactly what it was in Bible times.

SERVICE
A rabbi dreamed he had been given the opportunity to see both heaven and hell. He was directed to a closed door and informed that hell existed beyond the doorway. As he entered the room he was surprised to see a banquet hall that was set for a feast. Everything was exquisitely prepared but all of the diners moaned and wailed in agony. In the center of the table was a mouthwatering dish of food and each person had a very long spoon set beside them. The spoon was long enough for one to dish out the food, but too long to reach one's mouth. Consequently, they were unable to eat and were shrieking with pains of hunger! The horror was more than the rabbi could bear, so he asked to leave. When he opened the door to heaven he was petrified to see the same scene. Everything was the same. There was an incredible table set with the finest china, and a mouth-watering dish of food in the center, and long spoons all around. Only here, in heaven, laughter replaced the pitiful cries. The difference in the two places? Those in heaven did not cry over their inability to feed themselves. They simply celebrated the privilege of feeding each other with the same long spoons. You could say, then, that serving others is a way to bring a taste of heaven to earth.

BECOMING LIKE HIM
Buffeted, knocked down but never knocked out, cast down but never in despair, persecuted but never forsaken, because - praise the Lord! - you have found the answer to what it takes to stand in the ministry you have received: a clear view of Jesus, in contemplation; in reflection of His glory in the midst of the battle; and then being made like unto Him as day by day your heart is lifted up to the Lord Jesus and He imparts to your life the sweetness and loveliness or His character.
