JESUS
Socrates taught for 40 years, Plato for 50, Aristotle for 40, and Jesus for only 3. Yet the influence of Christ’s 3-year ministry infinitely transcends the impact left by the combined 130 years of teaching from these men who were among the greatest philosophers of all antiquity. Jesus painted no pictures; yet, some of the finest paintings of Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci received their inspiration from Him. Jesus wrote no poetry; but Dante, Milton, and scores of the world’s greatest poets were inspired by Him. Jesus composed no music; still Haydn, Handel, Beethoven, Bach, and Mendelssohn reached their highest perfection of melody in the hymns, symphonies, and oratories they composed in His praise. Every sphere of human greatness has been enriched by this humble Carpenter of Nazareth.

FAITH COULD NOT WAIT TO PRAISE
[Commenting on Luke 1:46-47]
…it was only for wondrous faith -- in some respects, her matchless faith, for no other woman had ever had such a blessed trial of faith as she had -- only her matchless faith that she would be the mother of the holy child, Jesus, sustained her. Even before there was an accomplishment of the things that were told her by the angel, she could sing, "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Unbelief would have said, "Wait." Fear would have said, "Be silent." But faith could not wait and could not be silent; she must sing, and sing she did most sweetly. I call your attention to this fact because when we ourselves have a song to sing to the Lord, we may perhaps be tempted not to sing it until our hopes are accomplished and our faith has been exchanged for fact. Do not wait, for your song will spoil if you do. There is another song to be sung for the accomplished mercy, but there is a song to be sung now for the promised mercy; therefore, do not let the present hour lose the song that is due to it.

Whatever else be lost among the years, Let us keep Christmas still a shining thing: Whatever doubts assail us, or what fears, Let us hold close one day, remembering Its poignant meaning for the hearts of men. Let us get back our childlike faith again.

In the stillness
the pause before dawn
The shepherd heard, faintly at first,
Their jubilant song
and watched their wings
brush colors on the sky
with and artist's touch
That joy and wonder
colors our Christmas now--
tho' angels, trumpets still,
no longer fly above but stand
beside the manger
and shepherd tends a flock of one;
Our son,
cradling the Babe in his tiny hands,
singing like an angel
the same song
with the same love
growing stronger every year.

HISTORY BEING MADE IN THE CRADLE
In the year 1809 all eyes in the world were fastened on Napoleon’s violent campaign in Austria. There was talk everywhere about marches, invasions, and bloodshed as the French dictator pushed through Europe. Most believed the entire destiny of the world was being transformed in the battlefields of Austria.
Unnoticed by the world that same year, 1809, in various homes in America and England women were giving birth to children who would one day have significant influence in history. William Gladstone, one of Britain’s greatest statesmen, was born that year. Alfred Tennyson, who would have a very profound influence in literature, was born. Oliver Wendell Holmes was born then in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A physician named Darwin and his wife that year named their newborn son Charles. And in 1809 in a log cabin in Kentucky a baby was born: Abraham Lincoln. Looking back at 1809 we can see that history was certainly being made in Austria but also in the cradles of England and America.
The same can be said of the time when Jesus was born. The Roman Empire ruled the world then, and most were convinced it would do so forever. Who would’ve thought that an infant born in a stable in an obscure village called Bethlehem would change the world like no other person who ever lived?

CHRISTMAS
Because You Came
Stephen Brown, in his book, “If God Is In Charge,” tells a wonderful story about a young couple that says a great deal about the Incarnation: "She was eighteen and he was nineteen when they met. They fell in love, and one year later they were married. Some six years and three children later, she decided while standing before the kitchen sink with a pile of dirty dishes and with a pile of dirty diapers on the floor, that she just couldn't stand it any more. She took off her apron and just walked out the door.
Sometimes she would call home to check on the children, and on those occasions he would tell her how much he loved her, and he would ask her to come home. Each time she refused.
"After a number of days, he hired a private detective to find his wife. The report said she was living in a second-class hotel in Des Moines, Iowa. He packed his bags, placed the children under the care of a neighbor, and took a bus to Des Moines. He found the hotel and made his way to her room. When he knocked on the door, his hand trembled because he didn't know the kind of reception he would receive. His wife opened the door, stood for a moment looking at him in shocked silence, and then fell apart in his arms. "Later, at home, when the children were in bed, he asked her a question that had long troubled him: `Why wouldn't you tell me where you were when you called? You knew I loved you. Why didn't you come home?' "She replied, `Before, your love was just words. Now I know how much you love me because you came.'"
God came! That's the glorious message of Christmas. It is the message of the Apostle John when he say, The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

INTERNET EVANGELISM DAY
Why do so few Christians use the Internet for evangelism? The Internet Evangelism Coalition is endorsing a worldwide focus day in 2005, to help churches and Christian groups understand the outreach potential that the Web offers them.
Internet Evangelism Day will be on 24 April 2005. Churches and other Christian organizations are asked to create a slot in their programs to focus on web evangelism. Downloadable resources are available on the IE Day website for this purpose: www.InternetEvangelismDay.com

PREACHER, JUST TELL THE STORY IN WORDS WE CAN UNDERSTAND
If you overuse long words you could be described as “sesquipedalian”—one who uses long words (such as “sesquipedalian”) when shorter and simpler ones would work just as well. The Gospel is a story which must be told, and it must be told simply. Don’t work so hard to impress others—just tell the story!

GOLDFISH BOWL WORSHIP
I have recently been introduced to a wonderful little book (approximately 100 pages) by Matt Redman. It is called “Facedown,” and is a refreshing viewpoint of what worship is, without getting into too much theological jargon. It will help you to focus on God when you worship. I recommend this book for anyone who leads in worship, or anyone who worships!
--Rocky Henriques
The following excerpt is from Chapter 2, “The Otherness of God” (p. 26)
A while back I bought my daughter a couple of little goldfish. I’ve never really been one for keeping pets, but I figured that these tiny creatures were probably quieter and tamer than most. So there they swam, up on the mantelpiece, apparently forgetting everything every one and a half times around the bowl. The very next day I found myself watching a documentary about creatures of the deep sea. Right down in the depths of the ocean, the camera was capturing the most fascinating images of wild fish and other strange creatures. I sat glued to the screen—so many varieties, so much untamed beauty. And there in the background were Maisey’s tame little goldfish, doing yet another lap of the bowl.
Sometimes in the Church, I worry that we’ve settled for “goldfish bowl” worship. We convey a tame and domesticated God, and then find ourselves stuck in the endless pursuit of the ordinary. But the call is to venture out into the ocean, to encounter the extraordinary and to explore the mighty depths of God. And though our earthly gathered worship times may never fully sound the depths of His glory, beware of those that don’t even attempt to do so.

JUST FOR FUN
One man said, "I always do my exercises regularly in the morning. As soon as I wake up I say sternly to myself, ‘Ready now. Up. Down. Up. Down!’ And after two strenuous minutes I tell myself, ‘Okay, boy, now try the other eyelid.’”
