NEW YEAR
Soon in your hand will be placed a priceless gift. Look at it closely. There is no price maker stamped on it. It cannot be weighed, because no scale can balance its value. A king's ransom in comparison is as nothing yet it is given to beggar and prince alike.  The giver asks only that it be used wisely and well.

This jewel, rare and unique, is not displayed in any shop window. It cannot be purchased, cannot be sold. No other treasure holds the possibilities this gift offers -- none can surpass its golden splendor.

Of all gifts, this is one of the most precious. It has been offered many times before; today, from the depths of a limitless love it will be given again. It will be left to you to find the golden thread running through it. Only with great care will the jewel retain its luster. Carelessness, ingratitude and selfishness will tarnish the brilliance, break the unspoiled thread, mar the perfection.

Guard it closely, lest through weak fingers it slip from the hand. Look often at its faultless beauty. Accept it as it is offered from the heart of the giver. Consider it is the most treasured of possessions, for of all gifts it is by far the greatest.

It is the gift of the New Year.

NEW YEAR'S DAY
As we grow older in life, years somehow seem to shorten and New Year's Day approaches with an ever increasing tempo. The more mature we get, the more we realize that time is only relative; how we live means more than how long we live. Haply also we do not live by years, but by days. In His wisdom God does not show us all that lies ahead. So we enter a new year to live it day by day. What is past is past. Today we start anew, and what we do today will make our life for tomorrow. Chin up, shoulders straight, eyes agleam, let us salute the New Year, and each day let us follow more faithfully, more courageously, more daringly the lead of our great Captain who bids us follow Him.

I heard the Old Year talking, and he seemed to say to me,
"I am what men have made me--not what I hoped to be.
I did not bring the failures; my days were bright and new.
I was the time allotted--the work was man's to do.

"I am what others made me; I had no will or choice;
Through all the days of trial I was given not a voice.
If victory came, man earned it; his was the faith and power.
If sorrow came, God sent it; I furnished but the hour.

"I came here empty-handed--a year that was to be,
And what I am in passing, mankind has made of me;
I am their petty failures, their glory, their success;
I am their souls' advancement, their shame, and happiness.

"I was not born in evil or governed by the stars,
I brought to some high honors, to others ugly scars;
Only my days were numbered; I was the time for toil,
And each has reaped the harvest, as he has tilled the soil.

"I am what men have made me--not what I hoped to be,
And so shall be the New Year which soon shall follow me;
Our days are good or evil, as each man serves and strives,
For years are but the records on which men write their lives."

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
Anyone who is inclined to make a list of New Year's resolutions should realize that there is only one such resolution worth making and it can be made any day of the year. The chief trouble with most resolutions is that they are too negative and too puny. We decide that we will not indulge in some petty vice to which we have been accustomed, and we are left with an uncomfortable vacuum until the resolution has been broken.
   Jesus offers a more positive approach to those who call Him Lord. It sounds simple enough: "Do what I tell you." Those who refuse are building for a fall.
   A resolution to do what Jesus tells us is not quite as simple as it sounds. It requires thought and study. It cannot be kept without courage and a sacrificial spirit. Sometimes it will seem to be a difficult and impractical way of life, but only in such obedience is there assurance of the kind of character that can meet life's storms.

NEW YEAR'S DAY
To get the most out of the coming year we must put the most into it, and we put the most into it by living in a spirit of earnestness, doing with our might what our hands find to do, not trifling with the golden hours, but receiving each as a precious gift from God. Only such earnest purpose makes the day a blessing, insures progress from good to better, and causes us to live in eternity while we are in time.

NEW YEAR'S DAY
At every moment of time we reach two ways---toward the past and toward the future. Today is always the day toward which we once looked forward, and of which we dreamed. Today is the day toward which we shall one day look back, and about which we shall muse.
   New Year's Day more than any other is such a day, because we think of it as a turning point between the failures and faults of the past and the better and braver deeds of the future.

NEW YEAR
While bells are ringing midnight-clear
Three gifts I ask for this New Year:
Faith is the pilgrim staff I crave
To keep me strong, to keep me brave.
Hope is the candle's pinpoint star
To lead me on the path afar.
Love is the mantle I would wear--
Heart-warming garments lined with prayer.
Father God, with these priceless three
Enrich the days Thou sendest me!

NEW YEAR
How fortunate we are that before we enter the New Year we first pass through Bethlehem, hear the Christmas angels "their great glad tidings tell," and lose our old fears in renewed faith.

NEW YEAR
Let the New Year be a year of freedom from sin, a year of service, a year of trust in God, and it will be a happy year from first to last. It may be the hardest year we have known, but it will be the happiest.

THE YEAR IS CLOSED
The year is closed, the record made,
The last deed done, the last word said,
The memory alone remains
Of all its joys, its griefs, its gains.
And now with purpose full and clear,
We turn to meet another year.
--Robert Browning
