THE JOY OF MARY
[Commenting on Luke 1:46-47]
The stress of the Virgin’s canticle is laid on God’s special grace to her. Those little words, the person pronouns, tell us that it was truly a personal affair with her. My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. The Savior was, in a special sense, hers. You can never know the joy of Mary unless Christ becomes truly and really yours. But, oh! when he is yours, yours with the end, reigning in your heart, changing your nature, subduing your corruptions—yours within, and inexpressible and glorious joy—oh! then who can restrain your tongue?

CHRISTMAHANUKWANZAKAH
Huh?
In 1997, the sit-com “Seinfeld” had an episode where one of the characters tried to introduce a new holiday. He called it "a Festivus for the rest of us." Well, now there’s another attempt at inventing a new holiday. You may have seen the television commercials from Virgin Mobile. This year, Chrismahanukwanzakah — devoted to "everything people love about the holidays" — will fall on Dec. 13. The word is a combination of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza. And it is simply nothing more than a light-hearted attempt at one company trying to make money from everybody, regardless of what they celebrate this time of year.
However, there are others who are taking this more seriously. December 7 began the 18-day-long Chrismukkah observance, and it’s for real. Ron and Michelle Gompertz were inspired by another television show, in which one of the characters coins the word “Chrismukkah” to describe how his interfaith family combines the Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations.
The Gompertz’s began selling Chrismukkah cards and other items commemorating both faiths online, and they admit that the venture has grown far beyond their expectations. Within the first month of operation, they had sold 25,000 cards.
It has long been one of my contentions that what Satan cannot destroy, he will imitate. And this conglomeration of holidays, combining Christian, Jewish and secular symbols, is a prime example. For many years Satan and his minions have attempted to de-Christianize Christmas. Lawsuits against cities and towns over nativity scenes, schools purging any reference to the Christian meaning of Christmas, department stores eliminating any mention of Christmas in their advertising—it all combines to remove Christ from Christmas.
So let me encourage you—if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ—to make extra sure that your observance of Christmas is decidedly and pointedly Christian. Let there be no mistake or misunderstanding which holiday you are observing—and why.

HOW ONE CHURCH FOUGHT BACK
Organizers of Denver's annual holiday “Parade of Lights” refused to allow Faith Bible Chapel to enter a float that would have included carolers, so as many as 1,000 people protested by quietly singing Christmas carols as they walked along the sidewalk on the parade route, passing out hot chocolate and a list of Christmas services at community churches.
George Morrison, pastor of Faith Bible Chapel, whose church includes 4,000 members, said that he was not even allowed to put up a sign that read, “Merry Christmas.”
However, the Two Spirit Society, a support group for American Indians who are homosexual, bisexual or "transgender," was allowed to participate. The group honors homosexuals as “holy people."
The Parade of Lights, a two-day event which began in 1974 and drew an estimated 375,000 people this December, is sponsored by a group of businesses called the Downtown Denver Partnership. Jim Basey, the partnership's president, told The New York Times the parade was meant to be "cutesy" for kids as a way to get people downtown.
But after hundreds of complaints about the parade's "no religion" policy, the partnership may have gotten the message that multitudes of people still believe Christmas is about more than Santa and candy canes.

YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS—OR MAYBE YOU WILL
From Representative John Doolittle’s (California-R) website (http://www.house.gov/doolittle/itk-12-03-04.html):
“Here’s one for the history books – or maybe not. In another distressing case of educational whitewashing, a fifth-grade school teacher from California was recently reprimanded for trying to push his religion on his students because he wanted to teach them about the Declaration of Independence. It started when the teacher, Steven Williams, was put on probation for allowing his students to discuss the Supreme Court case regarding the phrase ‘under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance. After one parent complained, a hyper-sensitive principal required Williams to submit all classroom handouts to her first for religious purging. After submitting the Declaration of Independence for the principal’s review, Williams was told he could not use the document because it contained the phrase ‘endowed by their Creator.’ The principal went on to reprimand Williams, telling him to quit pushing his religious views on the students.
“While one of America’s founding documents offended this principal’s religious sensibilities, she applauded Williams for teaching his students about Ramadan and Kwanzaa. In other words, when it comes to teaching other religions, a teacher is hailed as diverse and open-minded. But the moment it shifts to Christianity, be it in the form of a child’s question or the Declaration of Independence, the separation of church and state police crack their hypocritical ‘pc’ whips.”

THE TIMES WE LIVE IN
As a little girl climbed onto Santa's lap, Santa asked the usual question, "And what would you like for Christmas?"
The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped: "Didn't you get my E-mail?"

UNUSUAL CHRISTMAS PICTURE
John MacArthur once related the story of a little girl who came home from church waving a piece of paper.
"Mommy," she said excitedly, "My Sunday school teacher says I drew the most unusual Christmas picture she's ever seen."
Her mother took one look at the drawing and agreed with the teacher.
"This is beautiful honey, but why are all these people riding in the back of an airplane?"
"That's the flight into Egypt," the little girl replied.
"Oh," said mother cautiously. "Who is this mean looking man in the front?"
"That's Pontius the Pilot," said the girl impatiently.
"I see. And here you have Mary and Joseph and the baby. But who is this fat man sitting behind Mary?"
The little girl sighed. "Can't you tell? That's Round John Virgin."

THE CHRISTMAS HEART
Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world of the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years... Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating Christmas heart.

READY FOR CHRISTMAS?
Are you willing to stoop down and consider the needs and desires of little children; to remember the weaknesses and loneliness of people who are growing old; to stop asking how much your friends love you, and to ask yourself whether you love them enough; to bear in mind the things that other people have to bear on their hearts; to trim your lamp so that it will give more light and less smoke, and to carry it in front so that your shadow will fall behind you; to make a grave for your ugly thoughts and a garden for your kindly feelings, with the gate open? Are you willing to do these things for a day? Then you are ready to keep Christmas!
