SPECIAL HELP NEEDED!!!
I have been contacted by one of the editors of Decision Magazine to help find the source of a particular quotation. We can find the quotation all over the Internet, and who said or wrote it (it was Charles Kingsley), but we are looking for a source. Was this printed in one of his books or sermons? If you know, please send your response to rocky@timothyreport.com. The FIRST one to CORRECTLY identify the source will receive via e-mail a copy of “Painting The Chicken” (a 2MB download, and a $21.97 value). Here is the quotation:

"One good man, one man who does not put on his religion once a week with his
Sunday coat, but wears it for his working dress, and lets the thought of God
grow into him, and through and through him, till everything he says and does
becomes religious, that man is worth a thousand sermons -- he is a living
Gospel -- he comes in the spirit and power of Elias -- he is the image of
God. And men see his good works, and admire them in spite of themselves, and
see that they are God-like, and that God's grace is no dream, but that the
Holy Spirit is still among men, and that all nobleness and manliness is His
gift, His stamp, His picture: and so they get a glimpse of God again in His
saints and heroes, and glorify their Father who is in heaven."

ALSO, there is a graphic which will remain up for a period of time for you to use to remind your people to VOTE! Any of the graphics appearing on the website are absolutely free for use in your non-profit organization’s publications, and can be downloaded at www.timothyreport.com

IS THIS REAL OR A HOAX?
As a follow-up to last week’s article on Internet Gossip, here is a website that tests your knowledge of truth. It will show you a picture and ask you to decide whether you think it is true or a hoax. Check it out—see if you can tell the difference:

EVERYTHING HE SAYS IS A FALSEHOOD
Fear is born of Satan, and if we would only take time to think a moment we would see that everything Satan says is founded upon a falsehood. He is the father of lies. Even his fears are falsehoods and his terrors ought to serve as encouragements. When Satan tells you, therefore, that some ill is going to come, you may quietly look in his face and tell him he is a liar. Instead of ill, goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life. And then turn to your blessed Lord and say, What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee (Psalm 56:3). Every fear is distrust, and trust is the remedy for fear.
--A. B. Simpson

NOTE: Actually, there is one time Satan tells the truth—when he stands before God, points a finger at me, and says “That guy’s a sinner!” But praise God! I have an Advocate!

BAD PREACHING
A pastor was doing his children's sermon with all the youngsters down front to hear the lesson.

He was discussing the story of Jonah. He quoted the scriptures from Jonah 1 and 2: "And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying 'I called to the Lord our of my distress and He answered
me.' ... and the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land" (Jonah 1:17; 2:2, 10).

When the pastor finished the quotation, he started trying to solicit input from the youngsters to help him complete his mini-sermon. He asked thoughtfully, "What does the fish vomiting Jonah out on dry land indicate to us today?"

One of the youngsters spoke with great enthusiasm for the entire congregation to hear, "It proves that even a fish can't stomach a bad preacher!"

IF YOU KNEW THE END, WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?
One day when a certain man who wavered often and anxiously between hope and fear was struck with sadness, he knelt in humble prayer before the altar of a church. While meditating on these things, he said: "Oh if I but knew whether I should persevere to the end!" Instantly he heard within the divine answer:  "If you knew this, what would you do? Do now what you would do then and you will be quite secure." Immediately consoled and comforted, he resigned himself to the divine will and the anxious uncertainty ceased. His curiosity no longer sought to know what the future held for him, and he tried instead to find the perfect, the acceptable will of God in the beginning and end of every good work.

DO YOU FEEL AS THOUGH GOD IS WAITING FOREVER TO HELP YOU?
All whom God uses greatly are first hidden in the secret of His presence, away from the pride of man. It is there our vision clears. It is there the silt drops from the current of our life and our faith begins to grasp His arm. Abraham waited for the birth of Isaac. Moses didn't lead the Exodus until he was eighty. Elijah waited beside the brook. Noah waited 120 years for rain. Paul was hidden away for three years in Arabia. God is working while His people are waiting, waiting, waiting.

THE WITNESS OF THE CHURCH
High on a rocky point at the mouth of the harbor stands a lighthouse. Its whitewashed walls can be seen for miles up and down the coast. Its towering figure guides fishing boats and pleasure crafts as they thread their way into port. But the lighthouse does not render its greatest service in the daytime and sunshine. When darkness falls or storms arise, those who man the lighthouse must go to work. The great light sweeps the horizon for ships in need of refuge. The darker the night and the wilder the seas, the greater is the need for the light to keep ships from crashing on the rocks.

Moral and spiritual darkness have descended on us, but the church should not cower in fear. It needs to shine in the darkness. The church stands as a monument to truth when righteousness prevails, but our purpose is realized best when darkness falls. The wilder the storms of ungodliness become, the brighter the beacon of the gospel shines. After all, Jesus said, "Ye are the light of the world" (Matt. 5:14).

BAD HABITS
On the Western slopes of the Rocky Mountains, a giant Sequoia lies rotting.  It was a growing sapling when Christ walked the shores of Galilee.  When Columbus discovered America, it was reaching maturity and it looked down from lofty heights during the American Civil War.  It seemed destined to live many more centuries.  Then, a few years ago, a tiny beetle started to burrow into its bark and lay eggs that would produce other beetles.  It seemed like an unequal battle at first, but the few beetles multiplied into hundreds, then into thousands, and finally into millions.  First they attacked the bark, then they worked deeper into the trunk, and finally, they were eating the very heart and strength of that magnificent forest giant.  Then one day, after withstanding the elements for centuries, the rain came, the winds blew, the lightning flashed, and the giant tree fell.  Not because of the elements, but because of the weakening effects of those tiny beetles.

Bad habits do the same thing to people.  They slowly take a toll until the day comes when the man or woman falls like that giant tree.

PRAISING THE SERMON
One woman ran up to her pastor at the close of a service and gushed, “Pastor, that sermon was absolutely wonderful!” She went on for a moment or two longer about how brilliant the sermon was. The pastor soaked all this in for a moment before responding, “Well, it wasn’t me. It was the Lord.” The woman replied, “Oh, it wasn’t THAT good.”

HOT DOGS! PEANUTS! GET YOUR SERMONS HERE!
Attending a professional baseball game in St. Louis, I was intrigued by the people who continuously climbed and re-climbed the steps of the stadium, attempting to make a little money by selling refreshments. Back and forth, up and down, through the entire game, these salesmen called out with excitement and fervency the names of the items they were selling. I was fascinated by them, first, because of their obvious commitment to what they were doing, and second, because often they called out to people who were interested in something else—watching the game.

Preaching is a lot like that, in that it requires a commitment that often forces the preacher to his study when he could be doing almost anything else. It requires a heart that is set afire by the Spirit of God in enthusiastic joy. Someone said once that “all preachers should be sure of what they are saying. Someone in the audience might be listening.” But many times preaching requires that the preacher share a message to people who aren’t listening, whose minds and spirits are elsewhere.

KEEP ON LOOKING AT THE LORD
Fix your eyes on the Lord! Do it once. Do it daily. Do it ten thousand times ten thousand times. Do it constantly. When your schedule presses, when your prospects thin, when your hope burns low, when people disappoint you, when events turn against you, when dreams die, when the walls close in, when the prognosis seems grim, when your heart breaks, look at the Lord, and keep on looking at Him.
