COMMENTARY ON THE U.S. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
by Red Skelton

When he was a schoolboy, one of Red Skelton's teachers explained the words and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to his class. Skelton later wrote down, and eventually recorded, his recollection of this lecture. It is followed by an observation of his own.

I - - Me; an individual; a committee of one.
Pledge - - Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.

Allegiance - - My love and my devotion.

To the Flag - - Our standard; Old Glory ; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody's job.

United - - That means that we have all come together.

States - - Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country.

And to the Republic - - Republic--a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people; and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

For which it stands

One Nation - - One Nation--meaning, so blessed by God.

Indivisible - - Incapable of being divided.

With Liberty - - Which is Freedom; the right of power to live one's own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation.

And Justice - - The principle, or qualities, of dealing fairly with others.

For All - - For All--which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine.

And now, boys and girls, let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands; one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: Under God. Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said that is a prayer, and that would be eliminated from schools, too?
--Red Skelton

PRAYER FOR NATION'S LEADERS
We know, our Father, that at this desperate hour in world affairs, we need thee. We need thy strength, thy guidance, thy wisdom. … May thy wisdom and thy power come upon the President of these United States, the Senators and Congressmen, to whom have been entrusted leadership. May the responsibility lie heavily on their hearts, until they are ready to acknowledge their helplessness and turn to thee. Give to them the honesty, the courage, and the moral integrity to confess that they don't know what to do. Only then can they lead us as a nation beyond human wisdom to thee, who alone hast the answer.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE BIBLE
Lincoln's indebtedness to the Bible is obvious and beyond dispute. He read it in his boyhood and its influence over him increased with the years. In his public addresses he quoted from the Bible more often than from any other book, and this was the smallest part of his debt to it. The Bible influenced his literary style, which indeed was modeled on the writings of the great prophets o£ Israel, as is especially evident in his deeply moving Second Inaugural, which reads like a leaf from Isaiah. And more, the Bible gave direction to his thought. To an extent probably unparalleled among modern statesmen, Abraham Lincoln thought in terms of Biblical ideas and convictions.
He was, moreover, a man of prayer, and this without apology or self-consciousness. He did not hesitate to request the prayers of others or to acknowledge that he himself prayed. Prayer for him was a necessity, and it never occurred to him to conceal the fact. He spoke of seeking divine guidance and aid as though it were altogether the most natural and reasonable thing to do.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE BIBLE
Lincoln was often a lonely man. Under the surface of his native humor there flowed a current of sadness. His great heart was often lonely, and, knowing that the Bible contained help for the sorrowful, he would frequently turn to this Book of comfort to find what human friends could not give. He had early discovered that the Bible was a dependable guide. It was the one to lean upon in the dark clays of public service.

LEADERSHIP
In order to be a leader a man must have followers. And to have followers, a man must have their confidence. Hence the supreme quality of a leader is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, on a football field, in an army, or in an office. If a man's associates find him guilty of phoniness, if they find that he lacks forthright integrity, he will fail. His teachings and actions must square with each other. The first great need, therefore, is integrity and high purpose.

WE HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL: SOMEONE IS LISTENING!
The little boy greeted his grandmother with a hug and said, "I'm so happy to see you grandma. Now maybe daddy will do the trick he has been promising us."

The grandmother was curious. "What trick is that my dear," she asked. The little boy replied, "I heard daddy tell mommy that he would climb the walls if you came to visit us again."

PERSPECTIVE
On staring out at a gloomy day: first you must realize that it is the day that is gloomy, not you. If you want to be gloomy too, that is all right, but it is not mandatory.

GOD KNOWS WHERE THE RIVER’S GOING
The hymns are right. Peace is like a river – moving, turning, plunging forward, carrying us downstream. It’s not a static resting place, but an attitude of heart and mind that enables us to relax and let the current bear us up. Sometimes we don’t want to go with the flow. We get comfortable where we are. We’d prefer to dig our heels into the riverbed and refuse to budge. But if we're to live in peace, we need to accept the movement of the stream.  The only peace we'll ever find that does not involve change is the final "rest in peace" on our tombstone.

The good news is, God knows where the river’s going. The Lord’s control, not our own, enables us to accept what we can’t see and be at peace with what we don’t know.

BETTER HANDS THAN OUR OWN
No matter what our journeys lead us through, we always end up in God.  From where we stand now, our future may look dreadful, exciting, boring, but we may rest assured that we are in better hands than our own if we simply give our future to Christ.
