SPEND SOME TIME WAITING THIS WEEK—ON PURPOSE
In waiting we begin to get in touch with the rhythms of life -- stillness and action, listening and decision. They are the rhythms of God. It is in the everyday and the commonplace that we learn patience, acceptance and contentment.

VALENTINE’S DAY IS COMING SOON!
In "On This Day" by Carl D. Windsor, the page for Valentine's Day includes this anecdote:

"Even the most devoted couple will experience a "stormy" bout once in a while. A grandmother, celebrating her golden anniversary, once told the secret of her long and happy marriage. "On my wedding day, I decided to make a list of ten of my husband's faults which for the sake of our marriage, I would overlook," she said.

A guest asked the woman what some of the faults she has chosen to overlook were. The grandmother replied, "To tell you the truth, my dear, I never got around to listing them. But whenever my husband did something that made me hopping mad, I would say to myself, Lucky for him that's one of the ten!"

WONDERFUL WORDS ABOUT JESUS
All good things here below have only a temporary and limited goodness. Some can clothe us but cannot feed us; others can nourish but cannot protect; others bring beauty but not progress; all serve but none satisfy. They are like a beggar's coat made up of many pieces, all not enough to either look good or protect.
But Christ is full and sufficient for all His people. . . . He is bread, wine, milk, living waters, to feed them; He is a garment of righteousness to cover and beautify them; a Physician to heal them; a Counselor to advise them; a Captain to defend them; a Prince to rule; a Prophet to teach; a Priest to make atonement for them; a Husband to protect; a Father to provide; a Brother to help and encourage; a Foundation to support … a Head to guide; a Treasure to enrich; a Sun to flood with light; and a Fountain to cleanse. As one ocean has more waters than all the rivers of the world, and one sun gives us more light than all the stars in heaven, so one Christ is more to us than having all the world a thousand times over.
--John Spencer, modernized by Warren and Ruth Myers in "Discovering God's Will"

INTEGRITY
During his time as a rancher, Theodore Roosevelt and one of his cowpunchers lassoed a maverick steer, lit a fire, and prepared the branding irons.

The part of the range they were on was claimed by Gregor Lang, one of Roosevelt's neighbors. According to the cattleman's rule, the steer therefore belonged to Lang. As his cowboy applied the brand, Roosevelt said, "Wait, it should be Lang's brand."

"That's all right, boss," said the cowboy. "But you're putting on my brand," Roosevelt said. "That's right," said the man.

"Drop that iron," Roosevelt demanded, "and get back to the ranch and get out. I don't need you anymore. A man who will steal for me will steal from me."

HUMOR
A church had a man in the choir who couldn't sing. Several people hinted to him that he could serve in other places, but he continued to come to the choir. The choir director became desperate and went to the pastor.

"You've got to get that man out of the choir," he said. "If you don't, I'm going to resign. The choir members are going to quit too. Please do something."

So the pastor went to the man and suggested, "Perhaps you should leave the choir."

"Why should I get out of the choir?" he asked. "Well, five or six people have told me you can't sing."

That's nothing," the man snorted. "Fifty people have told me that you can't preach!"

HAVE COURAGE, MY BOY, TO SAY NO
You’re starting today on life’s journey,
Alone on the highway of life.
You’ll meet with a thousand temptations,
Each city with evil is rife.
This world is a stage of excitement,
There’s danger wherever you go,
But if you are tempted in weakness,
Have courage, my boy, to say no.

The siren’s sweet smile may allure you,
Beware of her cunning and art.
Whenever you see her approaching,
Be guarded and haste to depart.
The billiard saloons are inviting,
Decked out in their tinsel and show.
Should you be invited to enter,
Have courage, my boy, to say no.

Be careful in choosing companions,
Seek only the brave and the true;
And stand by your friends when in trial,
Ne’er changing the old for the new.
And when by false friends you are tempted,
The taste of the wine cup to know,
With firmness, with patience and kindness,
Have courage, my boy, to say no.

The bright sparkling wine may be offered,
No matter how tempting it be.
From poison that stings like an adder,
My boy, have the courage to flee.
The gambling halls are before you,
Their lights, how they dance to and fro;
You may be invited to enter,
Do have courage, my boy, to say no.

In courage alone lies your safety,
When you the long journey begin,
And trust in your heavenly Father
Will keep you unspotted from sin.
Temptations will go on increasing,
As streams from a rivulet flow.
But if you are true to your manhood,
You’ll have courage, my boy, and say no.

LIKE HIDDEN GOLD
The truths of the Bible are like gold in the soil. Whole generations walk over it, and know not what treasures are hidden beneath. So centuries of men pass over the Scriptures, and know not what riches lie under the feet of their interpretation. Sometimes when they discover them, they call them new truths. One might as well call gold, newly dug, new gold.

The Bible, without a spiritual life to interpret it, is like a trellis on which no vine grows—bare, angular, and in the way. The Bible with a spiritual life, is like a trellis covered with a luxuriant vine—beautiful, odorous and heavy, with purple clusters shining through the leaves.

A stranger hearing of a great organ in one of the cathedrals of Europe sought opportunity to feel out the possible volumes of music. Entering the cathedral he was met by the old organist who refused him the privilege of trying it out. After much persuasion the old man finally consented. However, he stayed close by to see that nothing went amiss.

As the stranger sat down to the keys there came over his spirit dreams of “The Ultimate Symphony.” He began to play it out. The music came and went like mighty tides of the sea. Combinations of tones were found that the old organist had never known were there. The music rolled in deep thunderings, sweeping on and on in wealth of volume and sweetness until it seemed the very symphonies of heaven had burst forth in a storm of gladness and glory. As the music died away the old organist stood with his wrinkled face bathed in tears. He fairly ran to the stranger and said, “O stranger, tell me who you are.” The stranger answered, “Mendelssohn.” The old man trembling said, “Mendelssohn, Mendelssohn, the master organist. And I came so near shutting you out from my organ. And O what a loss it would have been to have failed to hear the volumes of music I never dreamed were there.”

So, my dear friends, the Lord Jesus is the Master Organist of the soul. Only as the Master is allowed to sit down to the keys and organ of our lives, will we discover our talents; only as we have Him within will these talents be unfolded; the whole sweep of our lives of usefulness depends upon having the mighty urge of the Master present in our lives. He will amaze you if you permit Him to bring out the music hidden there. Such harmonies of beautiful living, such volumes of the deep music of gladness, such rhapsodies of love will sound forth disclosing the truth that the human spirit is indeed none other than…the instrument made to be used to express the gladness of the heart of God.
