THIS WEBSITE IS A GOOD RESOURCE
…especially for teachers of children’s classes. It is www.twopaths.com. There you will find Bible word search puzzles which can be printed for handouts, Bible quizzes, etc. There are also some Bible studies, but I have not explored them enough to be able to recommend them to anyone. The word search puzzles and quizzes can be worked while online, or you can print the page for later use.

CHRISTMAS IN THREE WORDS
If we could condense all the truths of Christmas into only three words, these would be the words: "God with us." We tend to focus our attention at Christmas on the infancy of Christ. The greater truth of the holiday is His deity. More astonishing than a baby in the manger is the truth that this promised baby is the omnipotent Creator of the heavens and the earth!

NEW YEAR
An oldie but goodie:

He came to my desk with a quivering lip;
The lesson was done;
“Dear Teacher, I want a new leaf,” he said.
“I have spoiled this one.”
I took the old leaf, torn and blotted,
And gave him a new one all unspotted
And into his sad eyes smiled
“Do better now, my child!”
I came to the Throne with a trembling heart;
The year’s work was done.
“Dear Father, I want a new year,” I said.
“I have spoiled this one.”
He took the old year, torn and blotted,
And gave me a new one, all unspotted.
And into my sad heart smiled:
“Do better now, my child!”

THE WAY
Not for one single day
Can I discern my way,
But this I surely know ...
Who gives the day
Will show the way,
So I securely go.

ANOTHER THOUGHT APPROPRIATE FOR THE NEW YEAR
Each day that we awake is a new start, another chance. Why waste it on self-pity, sloth and selfishness?

Roll that day around on your tongue, relish the taste of its freedom. Breathe deeply of the morning air, savor the fragrance of opportunity. Run your hands along the spine of those precious 24 hours and feel the strength in that sinew and bone.

Life is raw material. We are artisans. We can sculpt our existence into something beautiful, or debase it into ugliness. It’s in our hands.
--Cathy Better, quoted in “Reader’s Digest,” December 1991.

BARGAINING WITH GOD
In the December 1988 “Reader’s Digest,” Gene Brown of the Danbury, Connecticut, “News-Times” told an interesting story which reflects on the way we sometimes attempt to bargain with God:

In a bazaar in Istanbul, An American found himself bargaining for a piece of Turkish brass. “Because it’s for you,” said the merchant, “it will cost you a mere 325 lire.” “That isn’t mere enough,” said the tourist. “I’ll give you 150.”

The dealer was aghast at the suggestion. “What if anyone should find out—it would be embarrassing for me to sell at that price.” The American repeated his offer of 150 lire. And it went back and forth that way for a few minutes. Finally the Turk said, “Rather than sell it to you at that price, I will give it to you as a gift.”

The tourist expressed his thanks, took the brass and started to walk away. He stopped. “You are very kind. A gift like this can only come from a friend. Now I would like to give you a gift. Would that be all right?” The merchant nodded yes.

“Here,” said the American, “is 150 lire to use however you wish.

The Turk accepted.

When it comes to our relationship with God, however, there is no bargaining.

PURPOSE
The cartoon character Calvin from “Calvin and Hobbes” once said, “God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I’m so far behind I’ll never die.”

PERSPECTIVE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
In his essay, “Meditation in a Toolshed,” C. S. Lewis depicted the difference between looking at a beam of light and looking along the beam. As he entered a dark toolshed, he could see nothing but a sunbeam that came from a crack at the top of the door. At first, he looked at the shaft of light with thousands of specks of dust floating in it, but then he did something most of us have done at one time or another. He moved until the beam fell on his eyes, and at that moment, the toolshed and the sunbeam vanished. Looking along the beam, he saw green leaves moving on the branches of a tree outside, and beyond that, the sun itself. Perspective makes all the difference.

THE GREATEST THING
The greatest thing is to be found at one's post as a child of God, living each day as though it were our last, but planning as though our world might last a hundred years.
--C. S. Lewis
