Things Are Not Always What They Seem

In 1941, star halfback Johnny Chung was leading his football team to a storybook season. Plainfield Teachers College won its first four games by scores of 13-0, 27-0, 35-0 and 23-0.

The New York Times reported that Chung had scored 57 of his teams 98 points in those four games, averaging a gain of 9.3 yards every time he touched the football.

Then suddenly, after winning a fifth game, Plainfield suddenly stopped playing. The Times reported that the team had disbanded, due to many of the players failing mid-term examinations.

But things are not always what they seem. The truth was that the whole story was a hoax. Plainfield Teachers College never existed, nor did any of the schools it had supposedly beaten. A stockbroker on Wall Street dreamed up the whole thing.

There are plenty of times in our lives when circumstances, or rumors, or appearances, seem to be something other than what they are. We can't always control what others are thinking or saying, so let's turn our thoughts toward the working of God in our lives. There are times when we feel that God does not care or does not know what we are going through. Remember, things are not always what they seem. It was true of Johnny Chung and his fairytale football team, and it is true of you and the situation you are in.

Esther Guyot once expressed this thought in a little poem:

God has a thousand ways

Where I cannot see one;

When all my means have reached their end

Then His have just begun.

So remember this, and be encouraged by it--here is something that wasn't just dreamed up: "…for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you" (Psalm 9:10).
