Super-Gluing The Dog's Ear
From Gig Harbor, Washington, comes this bizarre story—but one which illustrates the feeble attempts we humans make to cover our sin. Anni Sheriffius had taken her dog Jasmine to an unlicensed dog groomer. Later she was trying to wash off what she thought was dirt—when the dog’s ear fell off.
Rushing the dog to the veterinarian, Anni was told that the dog’s ear had been completely severed—then super-glued back on. And poor Jasmine, a shi tzu, had to be treated for an infection–where the ear used to be!
And from San Rafael, California, comes another reminder of this truth. A 35-year-old man crashed his wife’s brand-new car, and to escape her wrath he fabricated a story about being car-jacked by two men at gunpoint. To escape, he told authorities, he purposely crashed the car into a wall. But under closer scrutiny, he admitted that he had falsified the report.
How like the rest of us these people are! We have sinned, every one of us, and have fallen short of God's glory. Yet, just like Adam and Eve in the Garden, and David the king/adulterer/murderer, and the dog groomer, and the bad driver afraid of his wife’s reaction, we have all tried to hide.
But there is no hiding. All our righteous acts are as filthy rags, the Scripture says, and all our attempts to cover up our sin is nothing more than super-gluing a dog’s ear back on, or making up stories to tell the police. We should read these stories, and shake our heads in disgust—then take another look in the mirror, and shake our heads again—and be doubly sure that our sins will find us out.
But the Scripture also says that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). In other words, we don’t have to super-glue the dog’s ear on! He offers us forgiveness; we don't have to hide!
