Don't Let A Rock Take Your Place

Bobby Sanderson is the Minister of Music at the First Baptist Church, Columbus, Mississippi. His columns in the church’s weekly newsletter often contain original gems that you have seen here from time to time. In a recent column (August 2, 2007), Sanderson tells about a family vacation when he was a child. They were traveling in the Smoky Mountains and passed the time by watching for strange road signs.

One of them was the warning about watching for falling rocks. We’ve all  seen those signs, or at least heard of them. He writes, “I’m not sure what you would do if you saw one! Do you speed up, slow down, get out and run, or just pray you’re fortunate enough to dodge them?”

He concludes “There’s not really much you can do about falling rocks. You can on the other hand help us with a different problem. There are reports that rocks have been heard singing at First Baptist! I’ve not personally witnessed this but I do know that Scripture records a statement on that very subject in Luke 19. DON’T LET A ROCK TAKE YOUR PLACE!”

Of course, Sanderson was making a point that every voice should be lifted in praise, and if obedience to that principle should lead someone to participate in their music ministry, they would be welcomed “with open hearts and some wonderful music.”

Recruitment efforts aside, remember the words of Christ that if His disciples were silent in offering praise to Him, the very rocks would cry out. And take Sanderson’s plea to heart, whether you sing in the choir or not. Lift up your voice and your heart in praise to your Heavenly Father. Don’t let a rock take your place!
