Remember Y2K?
It’s been more than a decade since we were all thinking about what was going to happen when the clocks turned over from December 31, 1999, to January 1, 2000. People around the world were afraid of what was called "Y2K" because they didn’t believe all the computers that controlled so much of our lives could handle the change.
A street food vendor in Bangkok, Thailand, Kieuthong Attaparb, was concerned Y2K computer problems might wipe out her life’s savings, so she withdrew the equivalent of $2,700 from a bank in Rayong, 130 miles southeast of Bangkok, and kept it at home over the millennium weekend.
On Sunday morning, January 2, 2000, her house burned down and her savings went up in smoke. And no, Thai banks reported no Y2K problems.
Fear is very much like that, isn't it? We expend a lot of energy being afraid of things that may never happen. Sometimes the steps we take in order to avoid the things we fear cause even more problems than we would have had if we had just left things alone. This often is the result of our trying to take things into our own hands, rather than surrendering them to God and allowing Him to work things out in His wisdom and plan.
This is what God’s Word says: "When I am afraid, I will trust in You" (Psalm 56:3).
