Happy Mother's Day!

Dr. Tony Campolo is a well-known inspirational speaker. While he has traveled around the world on speaking tours, his wife, Peggy, has stayed home and dedicated herself to the raising of their two children.

On occasion, Peggy does travel with Tony. And she has been in the company of some of the most sophisticated people in the world--people with long lists of accomplishments.

Being in conversations with some of these people has made Peggy feel intimidated--even to the point of questioning her own self-worth. After all, she was just a stay-at-home mother and housewife. Tony told her, "Well, honey, why don't you come up with something you could say when you meet people that will let them know that you strongly value what you do and you feel that it is dramatically urgent and crucial and important."

Soon after, Tony and Peggy were at a party, when a woman said to Peggy in a rather condescending tone, "Well, my dear, what do you do?" Peggy was ready with an answer:

"I am nurturing two Homo Sapiens into the dominant values of the Judaeo-Christian tradition in order that they might become instruments for the transformation of the social order into the kind of eschatological utopia God envisioned from the beginning of time."

And the other woman said, "Oh my, I'm just a lawyer."

Today we say "Happy Mother's Day" to all our moms. You may actually be a lawyer, or a doctor, or a teacher or almost anything else. But the most important job you could ever have is that of being a mother. We thank God today--and everyday--for your love and encouragement that has sustained us through some dark days. We praise God for your holy lives and unwavering faith that have provided godly examples for all of us. And we quietly reflect on your lives which have led us down narrow paths.

Many of us only have memories of our Mothers. Those of you who have a Mom still with you, be sure to go see her today. Or if she lives too far away, pick up the phone and call her. It requires so little of your time and will mean so much to her.
